Sonya P. Dancoe, a federal highways administrator for the Department of Public Works, completed the California Special Civil Seismic Exam on April 14, 2012, saying, “it has always been a goal of mine.”

Dancoe completed her Principles and Practice of Engineering or P.E. exam in April 2010. The PE exam is a professional exam much like the examinations required for public accounting, law, and other professions for which protection of the public is of utmost concern.

Once Dancoe passed her P.E. exam she continued her eligibility requirements to become a P.E. by completing the California Special Civil Seismic Exam, which includes the practice of seismic design, analysis, and evaluation of new and existing civil engineering projects including structural analysis and/or principles of earthquake resistance design.

“Everyone is so happy for her, she’s so deserving of this. She works very hard for the people in the CNMI,” said Geri Dela Cruz, project coordinator for DPW.

With this accomplishment, Dancoe has earned the privilege to register for her license and practice in the State of California, the Territory of Guam and the CNMI where it is required by law to hold a completion in the Seismic Principles study.

When asked what’s next, Dancoe says that she wants to grow her career and firmly believes that change in the engineering profession is constant. “While we abide by the basic principles, we need to be innovative in breaking new ground and offering alternative solutions for the benefit and safety of others.”

Dancoe is an island native to the CNMI and resides in As Lito with her husband Curtis and two children, King Dalton and Lady Vanessa.
