The Public School System’s musicians and artists staged a two-night sellout production at a packed Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center on Friday and Saturday evening. The 5th PSS Music and Arts Festival highlighted choral renditions, instrumental ensembles, and a musical theater production.

An art exhibit and student booths were also held on Saturday.

According to Board of Education chair MaryLou S. Ada, this was yet another best performance by PSS students.

“It was such an awesome, wonderful event. Every student did really well. Every year it gets better,” she said. They “are all winners and they did a great job.”

She also acknowledged the parents’ continued support. “There are so much talent in our public schools and our Public School System will continue to showcase these talents to the community. And our public school students continue to work hard because there is support from their parents.”

The two-day festival highlighted various group and individual performances. They include the San Vicente Glee Club, Polksai Chamorro Club, Laurence Tubera of Garapan Elementary School, MHS Symphonic Wind Band, MHS Dolphin Pep Band, My Haggan Dream, Kagman High School Music Club, Sengebau winners (Mix), solo violinist of Dandan Middle School, MHS Music Class Jr. Thespian (Mix), and Re-Up Club of Hopwood Middle School.

Ada was joined at the Multi-Purpose Center by BOE vice chair Janice Marie A. Tenorio and Herman Atalig, who is also the board secretary/treasurer.

Community, parental support

Education Commissioner Cynthia Deleon Guerrero had nothing but positive words for the students and their parents.

“The performances were just absolutely amazing. I am very proud to be part of our public school students success,” she said. “I give great salute to the parents, the teachers and, of course, the students themselves for sharing their exceptional talents.”

Deleon Guerrero also pointed out how arts and music continue to help student achievement. “Research show that arts and music really help student achievement. There is no doubt about it. Arts and music are something that many of our students are passionate about.”

This was Deleon Guerrero’s first festival since being appointed education commissioner late last year.

“Just seeing our students perform at this exceptional level is absolutely amazing and I am really happy to be part of it,” she said.
