Public warned of high surf
Based on information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, a large north swell from a winter storm that moved off Japan will maintain hazardous surf through at least Thursday. Hazardous surf will spread to east facing reefs in the CNMI.
A high surf advisory is in effect until 6am Friday.
For north facing reefs, a large north swell is expected to bring hazardous surf of 9 to 13 feet to the Marianas. Surf is expected to remain near these levels through today, Wednesday, before beginning to subside. The surf on north facing reefs is expected to remain above hazardous levels through Friday morning.
For east facing reefs, a large north swell veers to the northeast over the next couple of days. Surf will become hazardous overnight for east facing reefs.
On Rota, a north swell will spread over to the west facing coasts producing hazardous surf of 8 to 10 feet. Surf will reduce below hazardous levels late Wednesday on these reefs as the swell veers further to the east.
The public is advised to avoid venturing near reefs along exposed beaches especially those facing north as rip currents will be life-threatening. (EOC)
