WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Aumua Amata of American Samoa issued the following statement in reaction to Dr. David Shulkin being appointed to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“I am happy to see that the President-elect has chosen Dr. David Shulkin to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Shulkin is currently serving as the Undersecretary of Health with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and acts at the chief executive of the Veterans Health Administration in that role.
“I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Shulkin back in September, and from that meeting, I can confidently say that he is committed to helping our veterans in American Samoa. His career as a physician and his time spent serving as the Undersecretary for the VA will make the transition that much easier, as well as improve the level of care our veterans are receiving. Dr. Shulkin will be a fantastic leader for the VA, and I look forward to working with him and the department for our veterans through my duties in the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
“I remain committed to working with my fellow colleagues on the Veterans Affairs committee, and with the new administration to ensure that veterans in American Samoa receive the same benefits and services as the states and other territories.” (PR)
