Man who mauled wife gets 90-day prison term
A man who choked his pregnant wife and bit her ear and nose during an argument was slapped with a 90-day prison term.
Nathan Roppul, 27, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to assault and battery and was sentenced to one-year imprisonment, all suspended except for 90 days. He was given credit for 51 days of time served. This means he will be released from the Department of Correction on Feb. 19, 2017, at 8am.
After serving his sentence, Roppul will be placed on supervised probation for a year. He will be required to perform 80 hours of community service and complete anger management counseling and alcohol abuse counseling.
Roppul is not allowed to possess or consume any alcoholic beverages during his probation. He was ordered to pay a $100 fine, $25 court fees, and $100 probationary service fee.
As part of the plea deal, the remaining charge of disturbing the peace was dropped.
Assistant attorney general Chester Hinds represented the government in the case. Assistant public defender Cindy Nesbit served as counsel for Roppul.
Roppul was accused choking his wife, hitting her in the face, and biting her nose and ear on Nov. 21, 2016.
Police said that when two responding police officers arrived at the couple’s residence in Susupe, they saw the victim on the floor with blood on her nose.
She told the officers that Roppul choked her and fled the scene. She told the officers that she had difficulty breathing.
At the time, she was three months pregnant. Their argument began after she found him drinking alcoholic beverages again. Roppul had promised stop drinking for the sake of their child.
