Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School and Hopwood Junior High School 5 clinched the championships in their respective divisions in the 2016 Wellness Through Basketball Tournament.

In the girls 6th grade finals last Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, FMS edged Hopwood 4, 15-12, while in the boys division title game, Hopwood avoided a shutout after beating Dandan Middle School, 26-18.

Freddy Pelisamen towed Hopwood 5 to the division win after scoring 10 points in the finale. He was the lone player in the entire field to break into double figures. Daniel Pablo backed him up, adding 6 markers, while Anselmo Toves, Edison Viana, Frankie Tagabuel, Dyrel Eugenio, and Alden Montes also hit the board for Hopwood 5.

The scores in each quarter were not recorded during the boys finale, but Hopwood was in control of the match right from the get-go and were never threatened, thanks to Pelisamen’s good offensive game.

Alvin Hocog led Dandan’s losing cause, logging 7 points, while Alden Borja and Kelani Serrano chipped in 4 apiece. Two more players graced the box scores for Dandan.

In the girls division, FMS held Hopwood 4 without a basket in the first half and survived the latter’s rally in the second to pull off the 3-point win.

Mikkilyn Higgins top-scored for Hopwood with her 6 markers, while Ramona Cabrera, Claire Barrozo, Agatha Borja, and Judy Andebos contributed 2 points each.

Hopwood 4, which nailed its first basket midway in the third off Marlie Teregeyo’s bucket, was led by the 4 points of Loralye Ogumoro. Helenor Ogumoro, Hevani Rasing, and Sha Ana Mendoza were the other scores for Hopwood 4.
