The Marianas Visitors Authority’s annual Christmas in the Marianas parade will be held tomorrow, Dec. 17, just after sunset at 6pm, bringing nighttime holiday cheer to downtown Garapan.

The parade route will be from Garapan Fishing Base north along Beach Road to American Memorial Park. From Paseo de Marianas north, Coral Tree Avenue will be closed from 6pm to 10pm Saturday, as floats will be on display along the avenue and at American Memorial Park throughout the evening following the parade.

Scheduled to participate with marching unit or floats in the parade are the MVA, Kagman Elementary School, Northern Marianas International School, San Vicente Elementary School, Saipan Southern High School, Marianas High School, Kagman High School, and Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School. Participants are reminded to assemble at 4:30pm at Garapan Fishing Base.

Following the parade, awards will be given out at 6:30pm to the winning schools for the Christmas caroling and skit competitions held earlier this month, as well as the float competition. Floats will be judged based on originality, relevance of the Christmas theme, use of natural and recyclable material for decorations, and costumes and props. In addition, students will show off their costumes with a Christmas catwalk at Paseo de Marianas beginning at 7pm. Entertainment and Christmas music will continue until 10pm.

“We’re looking forward to awarding the students this Saturday for all the hard work and enthusiasm they have put into celebrating Christmas in the Marianas,” said MVA Community Projects specialist Ryan Calvo, lead organizer of the event. “Everyone is invited to join us for another great night of food, fun and holiday festivities this Saturday.”

The monthlong Christmas in the Marianas, organized by the MVA, PDM Promoters, Inc., Team PDI, and other travel partners, offers weekly holiday entertainment for visitors and residents, alike. Dec. 23 and 30 will feature live performances at Paseo de Marianas. The Japanese Mochitsuki Festival will be held on Dec. 30, marking the pounding of rice to make “mochi,” a traditional event in preparation for the new year.
