Intoxicated man who beat up wife gets six-month sentence
A man who, while intoxicated, assaulted his common-law wife in Garapan, was sentenced to six months in prison yesterday.
Herbert Bel, 38, was sentenced to one-year in prison, all suspended except for six months. He was given credit for 186 days of time served. He shall be placed on probation for three years.
During his probation, Bel is prohibited from having any contact with the victim. He is also required to stay away from the Admiral Restaurant and Bar and its manager, who helped the victim.
Bel is prohibited from consuming alcohol during his probation. He is required to complete counseling.
Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio also ordered Bel to pay a $25 in court assessment fee, $300 in probation fee, and $770 to Admiral Restaurant and Bar.
Bel allegedly chased his wife in Garapan, struck, punched, and kicked her and tried to gouge out her eye on June 22, 2016. He pleaded guilty to assault and battery. The other charges—criminal mischief and disturbing the peace—were dropped.
Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig served as counsel for Bel.
The victim sustained a lump on the back of head, a bruise on the forearm, and pain in her body.
