High surf seen until Sunday
Based on information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, a trade wind surge and accompanying disturbance are producing waves up to 11 feet as measured by the Ipan buoy. This is large enough to produce hazardous surf along north and east facing reefs of the Marianas.
A high surf advisory is now in effect until 3pm Sunday. Waves and surf will quickly rise, reaching 7 to 9 feet on north facing reefs and between 10 and 12 feet with occasional 14-foot seas along east facing reefs of the Marianas.
Surf is expected to remain hazardous through at least Sunday. The high surf will affect reefs and beaches within the Marianas, producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.
A small craft advisory is now in effect until 3pm Sunday. Fresh to strong trade winds and combined seas of 8 to 11 feet will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft through Sunday afternoon. There have been a few waves as high as 17 feet measured by Ritidian buoy.
The EOC is advising the public and inexperienced mariners to avoid swimming or venturing near reefs along exposed beaches, especially those facing north and east. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions. (EOC)
