The Commonwealth Election Commission will start processing today, Monday, the 984 absentee ballots, and will collect other absentee ballots tomorrow, Tuesday for counting.

CEC administrative officer Kayla Igitol said the public is welcome to watch the processing of 984 absentee ballots at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center.

The 984 absentee ballots are those that arrived at the Saipan post office last Nov. 8. CEC expects more absentee ballots to arrive at the post office on or before the scheduled tabulation tomorrow; a total of 1,699 absentee ballots were sent out.

Igitol said the 984 absentee ballots will be checked today if voters complied with all the requirements. She said all absentee ballots will be tabulated tomorrow.

Only those absentee ballots that are postmarked on or before Nov. 8 will be accepted.

The CEC board will meet today and tomorrow. The commissioners are expected to formally announce them as members of the tabulation committee for absentee ballots.

Igitol earlier stated that a machine will be used to count the absentee ballots.

After the tabulation of the absentee ballots, the commissioners will then certify the results of the Nov. 8 general election.

The absentee ballots are crucial to candidates who have close edges over their rivals such as the Rota Senate position.
