Chacha routs Hopwood 5

Chat Oceanview Middle School cruised to a 45-20 victory over Hopwood Junior High School 5 in the continuation of the 2016 Wellness Through Basketball Tournament last Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Chacha proved to be too much for Hopwood 5, as the former opened a 23-9 lead in the first half and never looked back. Jay Art Palmer led Chacha with his 22 points.
Chacha and Hopwood 5 are among the six teams playing in the middle school division of the Public School System-organized tournament that started last week. Chacha also played yesterday against Dandan Middle School and seemed headed for another win as it led big in the first half, 23-4.
In other results in last Monday and Tuesday’s matches, Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School notched two victories in the girls division, while Tanapag Middle School and Hopwood 4 downed their separate foes.
FMS first won against Hopwood A, 18-8, and then prevailed over Dandan Middle School, 20-4. Marinel, Emalumpa, Judy Andebor, and Claire Barrozo teamed up in the victory after combining for 14 points against Hopwood A. Versus Dandan, Ramona Cabrera registered 8 points to lift FMS to another victory.
In the boys division, Hopwood 4 dominated Hopwood 5, 45-22, while Tanapag posted the closest win this week following a 31-30 triumph over Dandan Middle School.
The middle school and ninth grade games are played from Monday and will run until Dec. 1. Playoff matches have yet to be scheduled.
The tournament will also have separate competitions for the boys and girls varsity and high school. The girls high school contest will be held this weekend with a round-robin format, while the girls varsity and boys high school competitions are schedule for Dec. 9 and 2, respectively.
The season will then culminate with a High School Invitational on Dec. 10 with Kagman High School, Marianas High School, and Saipan Southern High School battling five private schools and one from Rota and Tinian.
