Hotel occupancy down 11 pct. in October 2016
The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported 91.06 percent occupancy among 11 member hotels for October 2016, an 11-percent decrease compared to October 2015.
A total of 57,255 of 71,820 available room nights sold in October 2016, compared to 65,009 of 71,393 available room nights sold over the same period last year. Average room rates were $136.02 during the month, compared to $124.41 last October.
“The decrease was expected based on last year’s circumstances. As with the month of September, the occupancy was artificially inflated by emergency personnel and local residents who did not have water or power at their homes after Typhoon Soudelor,” said HANMI chair Gloria Cavanagh. “Based on year 2013 and 2014, we are up by a little more than 8 percent. The great news is the continued increase in average room rates of 9 percent for the month of October and the year-to-date increase of 6 percent.”
So far this calendar year, the average occupancy rate is 86.71 percent, while the average room rate is $140.86.
