Triple J sponsors public library golf tournament

Triple J Saipan recently sponsored the Closest to the Pin Prize for the 2nd Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Nov. 12 at Lao Lao Bay Golf & Resort.

The golf tournament saw a turnout of over 80 participants. Given many of the recent challenges the public library has faced, the donations collected from this tournament will greatly improve all free programs such as e-book access, read-aloud for children, summer reading activities, family movie day, tutoring services, cultural classes, computer literacy classes, free Internet access and free WiFi connectivity. Also, with their Bookmobile Outreach Program, the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library can reach and serve community members in many underprivileged and underserved areas.

“Bringing free educational programs to the community should be our top priority here on Saipan. Many of our community are in remote areas, unable to access certain amenities. Books should never be one of those,” said Mike Sablan, vice president of Finance and Business Administration.

In 2015, a total of 66,084 patrons visited JKPL, 25,000 of which were school-aged children and teens. They circulated 43,998 library materials (print and non-print) with 38,224 registered patrons. The Bookmobile Outreach Program reached out to 5,000 community members.
