Basketball games galore

Over at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium for the UFO caging, the DYS/SMF and VisMinda-Hi-Five arranged their title match in the U14 division of the Docomo Pacific Cup. DYS/SMF was seeded to the finals outright after topping the double-round robin regular season, while VisMinda took the second finals berth after edging MDX/Armatech in a playoff game, 65-63.

In the U20 league, DYS/Bayani also advanced to the finals after routing AON/Boholano, 88-36, and the former was scheduled to meet MDX/Mariana Resort in the winner-take-all title match yesterday afternoon. MDX gained a finals berth after eking out a 71-64 victory over SIP/Barney’s.

In the Masters Budweiser Cup, it was defending champion MDX/Armatech versus Bayani/LBT. The title duel was also played yesterday with MDX marching into the finals after beating Batangas/Fong’s Bakery, 91-75, and Bayani eliminating Laguna in the other semis tiff, 92-72.

At the Gualo Rai Court for the 2012 DLX/DL JOS Inter-Color Basketball League, only two teams are left standing-Team Pogi and KFC/Taco Bell. Team Pogi won a finals berth after ousting Irish Spring last Friday, while KFC/Taco Bell prevailed in the other semis game against Mawati. The finale set for last Saturday was rained-out and will be played tonight.

At the Garapan Basketball Court, the 2012 Blue Haus Invitational Basketball League is also down to two teams-Irish Spring and QQ Rent A Car. Irish Spring made it to the finals after surprisingly whipping Mobil, 103-93, while QQ Rent A Car also advanced after beating Ashley’s, 87-79.

Other on-going competitions on Saipan continued last week with the 2012 Saipan Major League Baseball and the Chamolinian slow-pitch softball league having with their regular season games and the Saipan Soccer School also holding preliminary matches in its men’s and women’s futsal league.

Still in soccer, MP United conducted a seven-day camp with its former players returning to the island to teach youth club members the basic of the sport.

In athletics, Rachel Abrams posted 13.05 seconds in the 100m run in the 2012 IAFF World Junior Championships at the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys de Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain.
