Based on information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center-State Warning Point, at 1pm Friday afternoon, newly-formed Tropical Depression 28W was centered well north of Kosrae, about 1,250 miles east of the Mariana islands.

Tropical Depression 28W has formed north of Kosrae.

Tropical Depression 28W is currently forecast to move west and intensify slowly over the next few days, taking it south of Guam as a strong tropical storm Monday night or Tuesday of next week. It is still too early to tell exactly when or how much Tropical Depression 28W will end up affecting the Marianas but the potential exists for tropical storm or typhoon conditions if 28W tracks a little more north and intensifies more quickly than expected.

The EOC is advising residents of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota to stay informed on the developing weather over the weekend and latest statements or advisories, which will be available through local media sources and NOAA weather radio broadcast on 162.5 megahertz, or call the CNMI EOC State Warning Point at 237-8000 or 664-8000, and for the Northern Islands to contact the CNMI EOC State Warning Point at high frequency single side band radio on frequency 5.205.0.
