CEC expects more absentee ballots to arrive
The Commonwealth Election Commission is expecting more absentee ballots to arrive at the postal office on or before the scheduled Nov. 22 tabulation.
CEC administrative officer Kayla Igitol said yesterday that they sent a total of 1,699 absentee ballots and that only 984 arrived at the postal office on Tuesday.
Igitol said they will pick up the last absentee ballots at the postal office at 3pm on Nov. 22 as the postal office closes at 4pm.
She said they would accept the absentee ballots as long as they are postmarked on or before Nov. 8.
Igitol said the CEC commissioners will process and tabulate the absentee ballots at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe in the afternoon of Nov. 22.
Igitol said a machine will be used to count the absentee ballots.
After the tabulation of the absentee ballots, the election commissioners are expected to certify the results of the Nov. 8 general election.
The absentee ballots could possibly affect those having close edges over their rivals such as the Rota Senate position.
The early voting and the Nov. 8 election ended smoothly. CEC’s partial unofficial tabulation results showed that the CNMI Republican Party candidates dominated this year’s general election, with all their three candidates winning Senate seats and 15 bets edging 18 rivals for House of Representatives seats.
