On this day…

Thirty years ago on Nov. 3, 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5564 placing into full force and effect the Covenant with the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. This was after extensive status negotiations that concluded on Feb. 15, 1975. President Reagan determined that the Trusteeship Agreement for the Northern Mariana Islands was no longer in effect, proclaiming that all citizens of the Commonwealth were to be citizens of the United States and welcoming us into the American family.

Today, we stand on 30 years of citizenship and progression with the rights and freedoms that should not be taken for granted. We are still learning but with every day we grow, we work in making ourselves a better Commonwealth, as well as better Americans.

From our families to yours, we wish each and every one of you from all the islands that make up our chain a happy Citizenship Day!
