SHEFA approves 625 college scholarships

The Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance office under the Saipan Mayor’s Office has approved 625 scholarships out of 912 applicants for academic year 2016 and 2017.

The SHEFA board gave the approval last Oct. 27 during the regular meeting at the SHEFA office.

A total of 912 applicants have applied since July 21, 2016, for various educational pursuits. Thirty applied for a scholarship to obtain certificates, 433 applied for associate degrees, 397 for bachelor’s degrees, and 38 for master’s degrees. Fourteen applicants applied for advanced degrees.

With 454 applicants on-island, 384 were approved, resulting in 70 who were denied. Among off-island applicants, 241 were approved while 217 were denied, totaling 458 off-island applicants.

SHEFA has granted a little less than $1 million in scholarship since July 21, 2016, for the academic year 2016-2017.

SHEFA’s mission is to provide scholarships to students in pursuit of a pos-secondary education on Saipan or abroad, with the ultimate goal of giving back to the CNMI community in terms of services and skills.
