HAGÅTÑA, Guam—Independent Guåhan will be hosting an “Arts for Independence” fundraiser today, Oct. 21, from 6pm to 9pm at The Venue in Hagåtña. The fundraiser will feature spoken word poetry, collaborative art projects, music, games, and an art auction. Tickets are $15 and include one drink.

Several local artists have donated paintings, books, and other locally made crafts for the art auction, including Andrea Nicole Grajek, Angela Santos, B.J. Bell, Fanai Castro, Franceska DeOro, Hila’an San Nicolas, James Bamba, Joseph Certeza, Kaitlin McManus, Kie Susuico, Michael Lujan Bevacqua, Monaeka Flores, Myracle Mugol, Nathalie Pereda, Nathan Topasna and Nina Peck. The evening will feature original music by Chris Boomer and JD Innawave, floral art by Art DeOro, and spoken word poetry by Melvin Won Pat-Borja, Kisha Borja-Quichocho Calvo, Nichole Quintanilla, Shane Root, and Shannon Siguenza.

“Our group has been pushing for, educating and empowering the community in many ways this year and this event is no different,” notes Monaeka Flores, the co-chair for Independent Guåhan’s Outreach Committee. “But this time we are focusing on inviting people to join the conversation in terms of creativity and imagining independence through art. In the movement for decolonization, creativity is key in inspiring people to get educated and also get involved.”

Independent Guåhan is the community arm of the Independence for Guåhan Task Force. The Independence for Guåhan Task Force receives funding from the Government of Guam, however, this money comes with restrictions in terms of its use and can sometimes take months to access. Thus, this fundraiser will help support educational activities, creative endeavors, and promotional materials focused on Independence that do not qualify for government funds. (PR)
