The Northern Marianas Humanities Council will be celebrating its 25th anniversary on Oct. 28 with a fundraiser at the Pacific Islands Club’s Magellan Restaurant from 6pm to 10pm.

Keynote speaker Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, a Marshallese poet, writer, climate change activist, performance artist, and journalist, will be headlining the council’s fundraiser next week.

Jetnil-Kijiner delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the United Nations’ 2014 Climate Summit in New York City. Her poem, Dear Matafele Peinem, drew a standing ovation.

Council chair Frankie Eliptico is honored that Jetnil-Kijiner would be present for the council’s event.

“We are truly fortunate that Kathy has accepted our invitation to speak and perform at the 25th anniversary fundraiser next week,” Eliptico said. “Her poetry reading at the United Nations has inspired many around the world and brought greatly needed attention to small countries like the Marshall Islands who are impacted by climate change.”

A musical tribute to the late David K. Peter would also be featured at the fundraiser.

Tickets could be purchased at the council’s office at the Springs Plaza for $50 a ticket.

Buying a ticket not only includes entrance to the party but also includes dinner, raffle prizes, entertainment, and beverages. Wine and beer would be served up to 9pm.

The council is a non-profit corporation that depends on grants and donations to fund their various programs such as the Motheread literacy program, the Junior High Mock Trial program, the Marianas History Conference, the Digital Archives Initiative, and the Garapan Heritage Trail, to name a few.

Also set during the 25th anniversary would be the awarding of the Governor’s Humanities Awards, such as the lifetime achievement award, traditional cultural practices award, and the outstanding humanities teacher award.
