Torres in Nevada for meetings
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres left the CNMI last Saturday to attend several meetings that would have an impact in the lives of the people of the Commonwealth. He would attend the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Advisory Committee meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The AAPI consists of representatives from the five U.S. territories: American Samoa, the CNMI, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Torres and Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo are co-chairs for Pacific Islanders.
The advisory committee was formed during the Republican National Convention that nominated Donald Trump and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as the GOP’s ticket in their bid to retake the White House.
The AAPI committee was among those included and unanimously adopted on the GOP’s platform in the RNC held at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
Torres said the committee’s formation represents the Trump-Pence ticket’s commitment to AAPI communities. “The committee will help provide recommendations on how best to ensure AAPI voices are heard and included in the campaign.”
“[Trump and Pence] will meet with members of the committee and AAPI leaders to discuss growing concerns over educational opportunities, employment and the economy, which are of paramount concern to AAPI families across this nation,” added Torres
Torres will also meet with Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and casino officials to discuss some issues with the gaming industry. Casino gaming is new on Saipan with Best Sunshine International, Ltd., which holds the lone casino license, building the Grand Mariana Casino Hotel and Resort that is expected to open its first phase in February.
“To discuss with the casino gaming members about our casino industry here. What it [casino gaming] has brought to Las Vegas and the potential of this industry [on Saipan]. We would like to discuss this kind of investment and see how it would correlate with our island,” added Torres.
