Coast Guard searching for man overboard
APRA HARBOR, Guam—Coast Guard Sector Guam is searching for a 29-year-old male crewmember reported overboard from a merchant vessel approximately 55 miles southwest of Guam, Sunday.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Guam Command Center received notification from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Honolulu, Sunday, stating that the Korean Coast Guard reported a crewmember from merchant vessel New Glory overboard, Sunday.
The 29-year-old male was last seen Friday. The ship searched for approximately 17 hours with no results.
The ship’s crew then notified the Korean Coast Guard who reached out to JRCC and requested additional support.
In response to the report, Coast Guard Sector Guam immediately issued an emergency broadcast to all vessels in the area requesting assistance. Coast Guard Sector Guam coordinated searches throughout the night deploying Naval Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO FIVE (HSC-25), the USCGC Assateague (WPB 1337) and a response boat from Coast Guard Station Apra Harbor. Commercial vessels transiting the area have also assisted the search effort. Four days of search efforts have been conducted covering over 4,500 square nautical miles. Coast Guard Sector Guam continues to plan for subsequent searches today pending further developments. (PR)
