Joel’s key player Andrew Palino and Jeremiah’s Michael Cabanas topped the list of mythical team members in the youth and adults divisions of the recently concluded 5th Genesis Cup Christian Churches Inter-Color Basketball League last Saturday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Palino earned a spot on the elite group after leading Joel to a first place finish in the double-round robin elimination and the championship win against Jonah. The Kagman High School standout helped Joel get a 6-2 record in the regular season and prevail in a tiebreak for first place versus Jonah. In the playoffs, Palino scored 28 points to power Joel to an 88-78 semis victory against Nahum, while in the finals, he tallied 34 in leading his team to a come-from-behind 81-78 triumph over Jonah.
The Joel quarterback and the nine other players were recognized during the league’s awards ceremony last Saturday after the title match in the youth division. Joining Palino on the group were fellow Joel member Jordan Ocaya, Jonah’s Sam Darag and Jethro Cruz, Nahum’s David Cai and Chen Haoyu, Ezra’s Gerald Santiago and Art Nathan Borromeo, and Hagai’s Seth Alonzo and Teewo Wang.
In the adults division, Cabanas led the elite selection after towing Jeremiah to a 62-58 title win against Ezekiel last weekend. Cabanas, who recorded a game-high 22 points in the finals, was also the consistent top scorer for Jeremiah in the regular season where his team finished third with its 5-2 record behind Gideon (5-2/won the tiebreak) and Samuel (6-1).
One more Ezekiel player—Isagani Cortez—made it to the mythical team, which also has Isaiah’s Mark Cando, Joshua’s Mark Puno and Jaymark Paclibar, Caleb’s Angelo Hernaez, Daniel’s Marlo Ibanez, Gideon’s Rey Darag, and Ezekiel’s Don Teregeyo and Dan Toribio as members.
