Unforeseen circumstances cause delay of SSHS stage project

Incidents beyond the control of contractors and personnel from H&H Construction pushed back the expected completion of Saipan Southern High School’s stage, which was funded by Korean conglomerate E-Land Group. The stage was expected to be finished before the school opening.

But the unpredictable weather, with the monsoon season, caused delays in the construction. Heavy monsoon rains and the two tropical storms—Conson and Chanthu—brought heavy rain showers to Saipan the last two weeks.

Outgoing SSHS Parent-Teachers-Student-Association Glenna SP Reyes said, barring further rain delays, the realistic time of completing the project is the latter part of September. “There’s still much work to complete the stage.”

“The construction phase is at roof framing with some beams already in place. In assessing the progress late Saturday afternoon, I anticipate the project to be fully completed by the end of September. Provided that the current work progression stays on course,” said Reyes.

She added that the construction of the framework of the stage’s roof would take at least a week. “Before capping it with concrete slab and during the 14-day curing period, the workers will proceed with the roof system for the two restrooms.”

Plumbing and electrical work, application of elastomeric coating on roof system, construction of walls on each side of the back end of the stage area and sidewalk around the stage facility, building the shower area in each restroom, installation of toilets and lavatory, plastering and painting, installing the tiles in each restroom and dressing room, and landscaping are the other things needed for the stage project.

The furnishings, which include installation of windows, doors, lighting fixtures, two air-conditioners, drinking water fountains, sun and rain blockers, and student lockers, would be put in place once the stage is done.

Reyes said the contractor, H&H Construction, has decided to barricade the site for the safety of the students and school personnel. “I have communicated with our principal, Ms. Martha Kintol, and teachers to notify the students to stay clear and away around the project site for their safety.”

She added that she would endorse the project and would make a progress report to the incoming PTSA officers this month. “I will be reporting to the incoming PTSA officers on Aug. 25 to turn over the project for them to see through the completion of the stage facility and for its eventual turnover to [the Public School System].”

The delay in construction also postponed their final project, the two wooden canopies or pala-pala to complement the stage.
