Learning disabilities
My daughter has a learning disability. As defined by Google, a learning disability is a condition giving rise to difficulties in acquiring knowledge and skills to the level expected of those of the same age, especially when not associated with a physical limitation.
During her first 3 years of school, learning the basics (i.e., Math and Reading) was a struggle. It was not only hard on her, but hard on me as a parent as well. I wasn’t sure of what to do, what to expect, or how to handle each situation.
This summer, I started my internship with the Northern Marianas Protection Advocacy Inc. I got to work with a former teacher of mine, who is now my co-worker Mr. Greg Borja. Through his assistance, I learned about the Special Education program, a Child Study Team, and my daughter was able to get the necessary assistance to develop the skills she needed help on in school, through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Last year she was a student at GTC Elementary, and she is looking forward to another school year this time at San Vicente Elementary School when summer is over. Thank you Mr. Greg for educating me more on the services my daughter could avail of in school and thank you to NMPASI for everything that you have done in making sure my daughter gets the appropriate education services she is eligible for.
