Kilili running unopposed for 5th term in Congress
66 running for 36 seats at the Nov. 8 election

More individuals beat the deadline yesterday in filing their candidacies, bringing to a total of 66 persons running for 36 seats up for grabs in the Nov. 8 general election.
U.S. Delegate Gregorio “Kilili” Camacho Sablan (Ind-MP), who is seeking his fifth term, is running unopposed. First elected in 2008, Sablan became the first delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from the CNMI.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho will also be in the ballot for his retention election on the bench. Saipan Tribune did not include the judge among the 36 positions up for grabs.
Yesterday, Thomas Lee A. Manglona (Democrat) filed before the Commonwealth Election Commission’s office on Saipan his candidacy for Rota senator.
Thomas Manglona’s brother, incumbent Rota senator Paul A. Manglona (Ind-Rota), is also seeking re-election. It’s the first time in CNMI history that two brothers are battling for the same position.
Aaron Jay Murdock (Democrat) also filed his candidacy yesterday for the House of Representatives Precinct 4 seat.
CEC acting executive director Julita A. Villagomez disclosed that as of yesterday on Rota, George Hocog (Republican) filed his candidacy for senator, four for Municipal Council seats, and one for Board of Education.
For Tinian, as of yesterday two independents filed their candidacies—Henry San Nicolas for senator and Diana Hocog Borja for a House seat.
Villagomez said six others on Tinian filed their candidacies for municipal council positions.
Hours before the 4:30pm deadline yesterday, seven filed their candidacies on Saipan.
Joseph Kani Ruak (Independent) is seeking the House’s Precinct 4 seat, Jose Itibus (Republican) is running for the House’s Precinct 3, and Vicente Aldan Ichihara (Independent) is vying for the House’s Precinct 2 seat.
Maria Lourdes Ada and James M. Rayphand are running for two Board of Education Saipan positions. Two others—Andrew Lujan Orsini and Janice Tenorio—earlier filed their candidacies for Saipan BOE positions.
Luis John DLG Castro and Diego Kaipat are eyeing the three Saipan Municipal Council positions.
Villagomez said that on Tuesday, three more independents filed their candidacies for House Saipan seats—former lawmakers Heinz Hofschneider, Stanley Torres, and Ana Teregeyo.
Hofschneider and Torres are running for Precinct 3, while Teregeyo is running for Precinct 1.
The five CEC members are going to hold a meeting on Aug. 17 at 1:30pm to certify the candidates.
