Marianas Outrigger Canoe Club’s men’s crew was named Team of the Month (July) during last night’s meeting of the Northern Marianas Sports Association.

MOCC’s men’s team, which was composed of Vince Tudela, Jose Quan, Rich Salas, Angel San Nicolas, Billy Grow, and Jack Kabiriel, earned NMASA’s monthly honors after dominating the adults races in the 2016 Mau Fatuul Classic.

In the men’s 500m finals, MOC was way ahead of the field after crossing the finish line at the 2:26.44 mark. Saipan Paddling Club checked in at second with its 2:41.36, while Napu Outrigger Canoe Club placed third after posting 2:47.14.

Kabiriel and company were also the winners in the 1,000m finale after completing the four-lap race under six minutes with its 5:47.38. SPC was the runner-up finisher anew with its 6:14.38, while Napu landed at third spot after recording 6:14.89. Both the 500m and 1,000m races were held on Day 1 (July 16) of the annual tournament.

MOCC paddlers then returned at the starting line (Chamolinian Utt) the following day for the long-distance course and picked up where they left off, beating SPC anew. MOCC bets completed the trek from the Chamolinian Utt to Managaha and back in 1:14:11 , more than six minutes ahead of SPC’s 1:20:50.

Meanwhile, NMSA president Michael White said the CNMI is invited to the 2017 Pacific School Games.

The competition will be held in Adelaide, Australia from Dec. 2 to 10, and interested athletes/teams from the Commonwealth can contact him for more information.
