Low pressure area drifts northeast of Saipan, brings more showers
The broad area of low pressure east of the Marianas has drifted northeast of Saipan, bringing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms yesterday.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service Guam, monsoonal west winds and periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected across the Marianas through tonight, Thursday.
NWS forecast is that isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur Friday through the weekend and possibly well into next week.
As of 12noon yesterday, NWS said the center of the low-pressure area was 350 miles northeast of Saipan.
NWS said west winds will increase to 15 to 20 miles per hour by Friday with gusts of 25mph or higher at times through the weekend.
However, NWS pointed out, no damaging winds are expected.
“Any tropical cyclones that develop in this weather pattern will stay well north of the Marianas,” NWS said.
Seas across the Marianas will become choppy later this week as west swell builds up to 3 to 4 feet for Friday and the weekend.
NWS again reminded the public that if they are planning any marine activities late this week to be prepared for west winds and waves and that coastal conditions possibly becoming hazardous.
