Assateague welcomes new commanding officer

SANTA RITA, Guam—Lieutenant Evin D. Moses relieved Lieutenant Sarah E. Ernst as the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Cutter Assateague.
The Coast Guard Cutter Assateague’s Change of Command took place last July 29 at Victor Wharf on Naval Base Guam. The ceremony was presided by Commander James C. Campbell, Deputy Commander Coast Guard Sector Guam. Special guests included Commander Brent J. Emery, Officer in Charge, Coastal Riverine Group ONE, Detechment Guam. Family, friends, Coasties and fellow service members all joined to wish Lieutenant Ernst fair winds and following seas as she embarks on life’s new journey.
Lieutenant Ernst graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 2006 and previously served onboard the USCGC Polar Sea as a Deck Watch Officer and as the Executive Office onboard USCGC Liberty homeported in Juneau, Alaska. Lieutenant Ernst served as the Commanding Officer of the USCGC Assateague from June 2014 to July 2016.
Lieutenant Moses graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 2012 and previously served onboard the USCGC Thetis as a Deck Watch Officer and as the Assistant Operations Officer onboard USCGC Waesche out of Alameda, California.
The change of command ceremony is a time-honored tradition and formal ritual conducted before the assembled company of a command to confirm to the men and women of the unit that the authority of command is maintained. The ceremony is a transfer of total responsibility, authority and accountability from one individual to another.
USCGC Assateague is the 37th of 49 “Island Class” cutters measuring 110 feet in length and was built by Bollinger Machine Shop and Shipyard in Lockport, Louisiana. The Assateague is an excellent platform to conduct Search and Rescue response, Ports Waterways and Coastal Security operations, and enforces Laws and Treaties of the United States of America to protect and defend the people of Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Republic of Palau, and Federated States of Micronesia.
