West winds, showers, and thunderstorms brought by a broad area of low pressure will occur across the Marianas through the weekend and possibly well into next week, according to the U.S. National Weather Service Guam yesterday.

NWS cautioned people who are planning any marine activities late this week to be prepared as coastal conditions possibly becoming hazardous due to west winds and waves.

NWS said a broad area of low pressure centered about 300 miles east of Saipan near 15 degrees north and 150 degrees east is producing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in a large area.

The affected area stretches from the Marianas eastward to 150 degrees east and southward to 9 degrees north.

NWS expects this disturbance to slowly develop and drift toward the north or northwest over the next few days.

“This will result in monsoonal west winds and periods of showers and thunderstorms across the Marianas through at least the weekend and possibly well into next week,” NWS said.

Winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour are expected by Friday with gusts of 25mph or higher at times through the weekend.

NWS said any tropical cyclones that develop in this weather pattern will stay well north of the Marianas.

NWS said seas across the Marianas especially in the western waters will become choppy later this week as west swells build to 3 to 4 feet for Friday and the weekend.
