Jenny Hegland, director or Commonwealth Advocates for Recovery Efforts along with A.J. Mettao, data specialist for the Crisis Counseling Program of the Community Guidance Center, will be featured this Sunday on “Your Humanities Half-Hour.”

Last August, Typhoon Soudelor hit Saipan with strong winds registering over 100 mph. Residents were left with telephone poles blocking off roadways, trees scattered about, and homes and buildings destroyed.

Almost immediately, our residents began the road to recovery by opening their homes to those who lost theirs, offering an extra hand to help clear debris and sharing any information about available services on island. Individuals took initiative and formed groups to help those in greater need and soon after, different organizations were created. One in particular, was Commonwealth Advocates for Recovery Efforts, also known as CARE.

CARE is a local non-profit organization that emerged after Typhoon Soudelor. CARE’s mission is “to build a resilient community and to identify, facilitate, and deliver resources and long-term support to address the unmet needs of individuals and families impacted by disaster.”

Along with the work of CARE, the Crisis Counseling Program of the Community Guidance Center has been providing counseling to those negatively affected by the typhoon.

Hegland and Mettao will discuss recovery efforts made and remaining work needed for the 500 families who are still without homes.

They will also be sharing information about events happening the week of the anniversary of Typhoon Soudelor such as Sou’ Rise’ (sunrise vigil), Sou’ Fest 2016, the Tournament of Champions, Sou’Ride to Recovery, and the 2nd Annual Humanities Film Festival: Soudelor and the Winds of Change in the CNMI.

“Your Humanities Half-Hour” is sponsored by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council and airs each Sunday from 2pm to 2:30pm on Power 99 with host Catherine Perry Harris. (PR)
