In Memoriam to have essay-writing and logo-making contests

The Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council will be holding an essay-writing and logo-making contest to usher in its In Memoriam event that pays tribute to all the men, women, and children of the Northern Marianas who died during World War II.
The two competitions will be open to all middle and high school students and the proposed criteria for the essay-writing contest are as follows:
Must be 500-650 words;
Must be typewritten and double spaced using Times New Roman, size 12 font or Arial size 10;
Name, school, and grade level must be on cover page;
Has answered the essay question;
Subject is relevant, accurate, and provided examples or references;
Writer has organized sequence of thought, point/argument, is clear;
Writing is original, uses appropriate word choice, and active voice;
Writing is effective in purpose, persuasive, and demonstrates impact; and
Uses proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
The rules for the logo-making contest are still up for discussion and will be announced as soon as it’s available.
The municipal council has planned a series of events for the In Memoriam commemoration, kicking off with a blessing of the Marianas Memorial Monument on Oct. 28 at 4pm.
The annual blessing of the Marianas Memorial Monument will be held at the American Memorial Park. The Marianas Memorial Monument is dedicated to Chamorros and Carolinians of the Northern Marianas who perished during the Pacific War.
The In Memoriam organizing committee is planning to invite guest speakers from the Office on Aging who will talk about their involvement before, during, and after the Battle of Saipan.
The organizing committee will invite historians and scholars to give a talk about the battle. It will also be asking the offices of the Carolinian and Indigenous Affairs if they know someone who could talk about a relative that took part in the war. The plan to guest in the radio show will most likely be in mid-July, August, or September. Official dates will be announced afterwards.
This will be the third straight year that the municipal council is organizing the event, which honors all the civilians who fell during the Battle of Saipan. (Mackenzie Perez)
