MCS Drama Camp fosters creativity
Students to air original films on July 29

Mt. Carmel School’s summer drama camp is the epitome of creativity in the classroom. Over 40 students who enrolled this year are being introduced to aspects of drama and film by their camp counselors and school president Galvin Deleon Guerrero, who is also a longtime filmmaker.
From costumes and set designs to book acting and cinematography, the school was able to host the camp with a grant from the CNMI Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Child Care and Development Fund Program.
“This has been really fun. I learned a lot of tips on how to be a good actress,” 12-year-old Kiana Propst told Saipan Tribune. “My favorite part has been learning about costume and set designing. It is very interesting to see how much time and work goes into each set and costume.”
Fellow camper Talia Bocago said that she joined the program for the second time this summer because she wanted to learn more about cinematography. “They taught us how you could use angles and shots to zoom in and out. I was also interested in costume and set design because it involves a lot of colors and makes our minds more creative,” she added.
One of their biggest projects this summer involved stop-motion video shorts with toy Lego pieces. According to Guerrero, there is a high demand for students to let out their creativity.
“Our theatre club is known for putting on plays, musicals, and films so we thought we’d build on that strength. I also think that it is really important that we harness students creativity as well,” he added.
With a number of summer camps ongoing, Guerrero noted that having a program that harnesses students’ creativity is important. He said, “Being physically active is very important, and there’s a lot of other camps that do that, and we also keep our kids physically active, but in the summer there’s not really much things to do by the way of creativity. That’s why we do this.”
The drama camp students will showcase their work in a Star Wars-themed fan film festival at Hollywood Theaters on July 29, 2016, at 10am with a $5 admission fee. For more information, call 234-6184 or visit www.mountcarmelsaipan.com.
