International Festival of Cultures seeks participants
The Marianas Visitors Authority is in need of more cultural demonstrators for 2nd Annual International Festival of Cultures beginning on Aug. 20, 2016.
The festival will be held Aug. 20 and 27 and Sept. 3, 10, 17, and 24 at Paseo de Marianas in Garapan and will celebrate the cultural diversity of the Northern Mariana Islands, with special emphasis on the indigenous cultures of Micronesia.
Due to many participants having extended work hours this season, the MVA is seeking more representatives of different cultures to share their skills and talents at the event.
“Whether their demonstration is big—like a dance group, or small—like traditional artwork, we’d like every interested individual to join us at our next meeting to see how we can fit them into the schedule,” said MVA Community Projects manager Martin Duenas. “We really need more participants to make this year’s festival a success.”
Interested individuals are invited to join the next planning meeting today, July 22, at 3pm at the MVA office on Beach Rd., San Jose. Individuals unable to attend the meeting are urged to contact MVA Community Projects Specialist Ryan Calvo at 670.664.3200/1 or rcalvo@mymarianas.com.
“This year we want to make the festival more interactive by having more demonstrations in the booths. This is to make the event more enjoyable and memorable for visitors and residents, alike,” said Calvo. “Also, some of these performances may be chosen for the main stage. We encourage every individual who would like to share their traditional skills or knowledge to contact me as soon as possible.”
The festival will include cultural demonstrations, arts and crafts, and food sales from 5pm to 10pm. Admission is free.
Students perform at the inaugural International Festival of Cultures in Saipan in September 2014. Individuals and groups interested in demonstrating or performing at this year’s festival beginning Aug. 20, 2016, are invited to contact Ryan Calvo at the Marianas Visitors Authority at 664-3200.
