The Society for Human Resource Management NMI Chapter will be hosting two events this coming week concerning topics of significance to the CNMI human resource and business communities.

David Gulick, district director for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, will speak on Tuesday, July 26, and Patrick Candoleta, the assistant district director of the Guam Area Office of the U.S. Department of Labor Wage & Hour Division will join us on Thursday, July 28.

Gulick will discuss two main topics: the CW transitional visa and the H-visas (H1-B and H2-A and B). He will explain the fiscal year operation of the CW visa program and what employers can do to stay within the annual limit. He will also speak about the H-visas alternative and what type of jobs can be applied for using the different visas. He will also explain the application process. Gulick will accept questions at the end of his presentation.

Patrick Candoleta will join SHRM again to discuss the changes in the FLSA White Collar Overtime Exemption rules. Candoleta will provide us with information and guidance on the new rules that will be in effect on Dec. 1, 2016. He will provide interpretation of the new rules, guidance on how to implement the new rules, and the outcomes if not implemented properly. He will also provide updates on other Wage and Hour rules that affect Saipan and on recent claims that have been investigated and closed by his office. His guidance will help businesses avoid placing themselves in similar situations. Candoleta will also address questions at the end of his presentation.

Both presentations will be open to the public and will be invaluable opportunities for employers and HR professionals and staff to gain a better understanding of the CW and H1/H2 visa processes and of the new overtime rules and other US Department of Labor requirements.

Both events, Gulick on Tuesday, July 26, and Candoleta on Thursday, July 28, will be held at the Pacific Islands Club (Charley’s from 11:30am to 1:30pm. The presentations include the delicious PIC lunch buffet at the cost of $20 for SHRM members and $30 for non-members.
