“About 10 rookies will debut in the meet and they are expected to swim hard in every race,” Tsunami Saipan head coach Hiro Kimura said.

The Tsunami Saipan coach added that besides their rookies, the junior and senior members of the club will also race next weekend’s competition and they are urged to set personal best times in each event.

“We expect good results from our experienced swimmers. They have to update their PBTs,” said, Kimura, who also mentioned the individual goals of five Tsunami Saipan swimmers.

Fifteen-year-old Takumi Sugie aims to finish the 50m freestyle under 29 seconds, while Angie Marie Tan will go for a record-swim in the girls 13 to 14 100m breaststroke. Tan’s PBT in the 100m breaststroke is 1:22.12, just less than a second behind the 13-year-old record (1:21.64) of Jil Pierce.

Kaito Yanai’s goal is to eclipse the second oldest record in the boys 11 to 12 age group-the 200m individual medley mark of Joshua Taitano, who timed in at 2:35.68 on April 1, 1994. Taitano also holds the oldest record in the age group-2:18.66 in the 200m freestyle made on March 28, 1994. Yanai’s PBT in the 200m IM is 2:36.22.

Miku Tammy, who crushed four marks in the girls 9 to 10 age group during the Guam meet in May this year, hopes to break Jellian Majors’ record in the 50m freestyle (33.36 seconds /May 8, 2005). Tammy’s best time in the 50m freestyle reads at 34.17 seconds

Ryuto Yanai, who owns five records in the boys U8 divisions, aims to update his own mark and CNMI age group records in the 50m freestyle (33.04 seconds/April 14, 2012), 50m butterfly (36.48 seconds/Feb. 18, 2012), and the 100m freestyle (1:15.18/May 26, 2012).

Meanwhile, Tsunami Saipan had a chance to swim with Olympic gold medalist (800m freestyle) Ai Shibata of Japan late last month at the Marpi pool.

She visited us last Saturday and swam with us. She gave a lot of advice to our young swimmers. We thanked Central Sports for giving us the chance to meet Ms. Shibata,” Kimura said.
