Ex-Rota cop arrested for domestic violence
A former Rota police officer was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly slapping his wife and hitting her on the head with a butane gas canister at their residence in As Gonno, Saipan.
Dennis Atalig Taisacan, 50, was arrested for assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.
At a hearing yesterday, Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio imposed a $3,000 cash bail on Taisacan.
Assistant public defender Cindy Nesbit was appointed as counsel for the defendant. Assistant attorney general Heather Barcinas appeared for the government.
Preliminary hearing will be on July 19 at 9am.
Police Detective Peter A. Aldan stated in his report that the Department of Public Safety dispatcher received a call on Sunday at 9:50pm from Taisacan’s 17-year-old son, who reported that his father was beating up his mother.
Aldan said Patrol Officer Ralph Rangamar responded, investigated the incident, and arrested Taisacan.
Aldan said investigation showed that prior to the beating, the defendant was drinking liquor that afternoon.
Taisacan slapped the wife twice when she denied his accusation that she was having an affair.
Taisacan then allegedly grabbed a butane gas canister and struck it at his wife’s head.
The wife got scared and panicked when she saw blood due to an inch-long laceration on her head.
The couple’s 17-year-old son witnessed the beating and called police. He told police that he was so scared to stop his father because he may also beat him up.
