Kilili: $350K education funding for NMI stays

U.S. Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan (Ind-MP) said Saturday a bill to authorize $350,000 annually for the CNMI was approved unanimously last week in the House Committee on Education on Education and Workforce committee, which Sablan sits on.

Sablan provided an update on H.R. 5587, “the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21s Century Act” in his newsletter Saturday.

The bill reauthorizes the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, which will help students get the skills that match in-demand jobs in our local economy.

“Marianas funding in the bill is protected for the next six years,” Sablan said, “although it estimated some states may see significant cuts after three years.”

He added while it will be challenging in this election year to get the Perkins reauthorization all the way to the President’s desk for signature, the bipartisan support for this bill and the Committee’s successful track record—passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and the Every Student Succeeds Act—give reason for hope.
