HHA wins funding to support micro-enterprise businesses
KAUAI, Hawaii—The SCHHA Homestead Housing Authority (HHA) competitively won $112,000 in federal and private funds to assist a dozen micro-entrepreneurs to get a start or to expand on the island of Kauai. The program is funded for 12 months starting July 1, 2016.
“Economic development, job creation, and economic opportunities are all very much part and parcel of affordable housing,” said Robin Puanani Danner, SCHHA Chairman. “They go hand in hand, and for affordable housing to be successful for low income families, building a solid source of income is paramount.”
The program will provide small business and financial literacy training, State of Hawaii registration and tax registration filing workshops, and financial support to get started with hands-on opportunities at an established marketplace, located in North East Kauai in the Hawaiian homestead of Anahola.
“The micro-enterprise program is made possible now, because of the previous decade in building a certified kitchen and business incubator spaces,” said Liberta Albao, the Kauai Commissioner on the Homestead Housing Authority Board of Commissioners. “As our housing authority continues its planning to develop affordable housing rentals on Kauai, this program runs parallel in supporting micro-entrepreneurs to get a start.”
The micro-enterprise program will partner with the Anahola Hawaiian Homestead Association (AHHA) that operates the marketplace space in Anahola.
“This is a win-win for Kauai,” remarked Sherri Cummings, AHHA Vice President. “I’m excited for the entrepreneurs that may benefit and grow their businesses to be self-sufficient.”
The Homestead Housing Authority mission encompasses the five regions of the SCHHA—Hawaii Island, Maui, Molokai, Kauai, and Oahu. It is chaired by Hawaii Island SCHHA leader, Mike Hodson from the Waimea homestead region. Other Board of Commissioners include Kaulana Mossman from Maui, Kamaka Purdy from Molokai, Iwalani McBrayer from Oahu, and Liberta Albao from Kauai.
