Beach Road Pathway renamed after ‘Lang’
The Saipan Beach Road pathway has been renamed the “Governor Froilan C. Tenorio Beach Road Pathway,” after acting governor Victor Hocog signed a local law last month to rename the pathway after the former governor.
House Local Bill 19-47 is now Saipan Local Law 19-14 and states that its purpose is to honor Tenorio’s “vision and initiative to construct a pathway showcasing the beauty and historical features of the island,” by renaming the pathway.
The pathway was constructed during the tenure of Gov. Froilan Tenorio, affectionally called Lang, with funds from a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The bill says that before the pathway was constructed, the area along the beach from Oleai to Garapan was “underdeveloped and under-used.”
“Governor Tenorio envisioned the pathway as a means to beautify the area and make it more accessible to the public. After its initial construction, the pathway became so popular that it was extended in each direction. Residents and visitors alike use the pathway for community and cultural events and for fitness and health training.
“The pathway is a great site to enjoy the beauty that surrounds our islands, including the magnificent sunsets over the lagoon, and to remember the historical events that shaped our political status,” the bill adds.
It says the pathway continues to be a symbol of the island’s identity and character and has been used by many and appreciated by all.
It tasks the Office of Governor, in consultation with Tenorio and his family, to prepare a plan of dedication including at minimum, the construction and placement, with an appropriate ceremony, of a sign at or near each end of the original pathway.
