The Saipan and Northern Islands Farmers Association announced that it will add a cooking contest and an ornamental division to this year’s Ag Fair, slated for June 25.

Dishes shall be judged based on the number of local ingredients used in the recipe, taste, presentation, and the health aspect. First prize shall be $150; second prize is $100, and third prize $75. There is a $25 entry fee; with entry per family. All dishes must be cooked on-site.

Details of the ornamental division has not yet been finalized. However, registration is ongoing for the animal and plant divisions. Vic Deleon Guerrero, a long-time member of the planning committee and this year’s rules chairman, says sustaining the fair is also helping to sustain our economy. The fair is a way to acknowledge the hardworking ranchers and farmers. He adds, “I hope they [farmers, ranchers] will show up at the orientation meeting so we can hear their concerns.”

Prizes for the plant category total $7,000, while the animal category shall reach $4,000. Farmers and ranchers are encouraged to start preparing their crops and livestock for entry, and they need to pre-register.

The 2016 Ag Fair will take place on Saturday, June 25, at the Public Market in Garapan. For general inquiries, please call DLNR at 322-9834, NMC CREES at 234-9630, or the Division of Agriculture at 256-3319.
