Gov. Ralph DLG Torres on Friday proclaimed the week of May 30 to June 5 as “CNMI Cancers Survivors Week” during a proclamation event at the Office of the Govenror conference room on Capitol Hill.

June 5 is also Cancer Survivors Day, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of June over the last 26 years among the 14.5 million cancer survivors nation-wide.

The Office of Governor, in a statement, said that cancer survivors face challengers and difficulties after being diagnosed with the disease, like financial hardships, unhealthy psychological and emotional feelings, employment problems, and personal relationship struggles.

“There are about 300 active, productive cancer survivors in the CNMI, and in collaboration with the Commonwealth Cancer Association and CHCC, and other social and human service providers, efforts towards the eradication of cancer in the community continues,” the statement said.

“With over 1.5 million new cancer cases being diagnosed in the United States and its territories this year, increased access to quality cancer care, screening, prevention, and patient navigation, remains a top priority in our community,” it added.
