Tan Holdings Football Club claimed the U8 and U10 division crowns, while Matansa and Kanoa split the U12 titles in the 2016 NMIFA 3v3 Tournament/AFC Grassroots Football Day held last Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.
Tan Holdings won the U8 championship following a 4-2 triumph over Kanoa in the finals. It was Tan Holdings’ second straight division crown in the same tournament as it defeated MP United 1, 3-1, in the 2015 title match. The back-to-back winners earned a return trip to the finals after downing MP United, 4-0, in the semifinals, while Kanoa prevailed against Matansa in the other Final Four pairing, 5-0.
The Final Four in the U8 division were selected based on their records in the round-robin elimination. Kanoa topped the five-team field with its 3-1-0 win-draw-loss mark, followed by Tan Holdings (2-2-0), MP United (2-1-1), Matansa (1-0-3), and Paire (0-0-4).
In the U10 age group, Tan Holdings also earned its second straight division title following Tan Holdings 1’s 5-0 victory over MP United 1. Last year, Tan Holdings beat an MP United team (MPU Blue, 2-0), too. Tan Holdings 1 made it to the finals after knocking out Paire, 3-2, while MP United 1 ousted Matansa, 2-1.
MP United 1, Tan Holdings 1, and Paire finished with similar 3-0-1 records in the elimination and were ranked first to third after the tiebreak to advance to the semis. Matansa completed the semis cast with its 2-1-1 slate, while Tan Holdings 2 (1-1-2), MP United 2 (1-0-3), and Kanoa (0-0-4) missed the cut.
After falling short in its title bid in the U8 and U10 age groups, Matansa finally made it to the champions circle after ruling the U12B category. Actually, it was an all Matansa-finale in the division with Matansa 1 blanking Matansa 2, 5-0.
Matansa 1 and 2 had identical 3-0-0 records in the elimination to barge into the playoff round and the former eventually took the first finals berth after a 3-2 win over MP United 2. Matansa 2 beat MP United 1, 6-2, in the other semis pairing.
In the U12A division there were also two MP United teams that entered the playoffs, but both faltered in their title bids, as it was Kanoa 2 which claimed the age group championship after winning over MP United 1 in the finals, 5-4. Kanoa 2 booked a finals berth following an 8-5 victory over Tan Holdings, while MP United 1 topped sister team MP United 2, 5-2.
MP United 1 placed first in the elimination after earning a 3-1-0 record, while Tan Holdings and Kanoa 2 came in at second and third with their 2-2-0 and 2-1-1 marks, respectively, and MP United 2 (2-0-2) was ranked fourth.
Meanwhile, each member of the division champions received miniature trophies at the conclusion of the annual competition, while the runners-up took home medals.
