Ex-convict gets 100-day sentence for scamming car rental’s owner
Defendant prohibited from going to tourist spots, hotels
An ex-convict who scammed a car rental owner of $500 by deceiving the businessman that he could help recover the passports and other belongings that were stolen from a group of Chinese honeymooners pleaded guilty yesterday and was slapped with a 100-day prison term.
Cheyenne P. Sablan, 29, pleaded guilty to theft by deception as part of a plea agreement.
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo sentenced Sablan to two years in prison, all suspended except for 100 days with credit for the 70 days he has already served in jail. Since he was incarcerated on April 18, he is expected to be released on July 27.
Upon his release, Sablan will be placed on probation for three years. He was ordered to pay $500 in restitution to the victim, Zi Jian, also known as James Han, and a $500 fine, $100 court costs, and $300 probation fees.
During his probation period, Sablan is barred from going to areas frequented by tourists. These include Ladder Beach, Obyan Beach, Forbidden Island, Kingfisher Golf Course, Bird Island, Suicide Cliff, the Grotto, Banzai Cliff, Last Command Post, Marianas Resort, Aqua Resort, Wing Beach, Pau Pau Beach, Micro Beach, Hyatt Regency, Fiesta Resort & Spa, Hafadai Hotel, World Resort, Kanoa Hotel, Pacific Islands Club, Chalan Kanoa Beach Hotel, Coral Ocean Point, and Lau Lau Bay.
According to the plea deal, Sablan demanded $500 from Zi Jian for the return of four passports, a pilot’s license, digital camera, and credit cards that were stolen from tourists at Ladder Beach on March 30, 2012.
When Han gave Sablan the $500, the defendant said he was going to get the documents but never returned.
