The Northern Marianas Humanities Council cordially invites the public to a presentation by visiting anthropologist Dr. Don Rubinstein that will be held at the Fiesta Hall of Grandvrio Resort (formerly Hafadai Beach Hotel) on April 29, beginning at 6pm.

Rubinstein’s presentation is titled “The Art and Vision of Paul Jacoulet in Micronesia.”

The Pacific Islands have long held a special place in the imagination of visiting artists, evoking notions of “paradise” since Europeans first encountered the islands and their inhabitants.

Among outside artists in Micronesia, Jacoulet’s work stands out for its technical virtuosity, its marvelous vision, and its intimate and admiring portrayal of island people

Working in the exacting medium of Japanese woodblock (ukiyo-e) printing, Jacoulet produced a stunning collection of portraits based on his visits to the Marianas and Caroline Islands in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Jacoulet’s first published prints, the iconic Rainbow Series (1934), featured seven beautiful Chamorro women in Saipan, each featured in a different color.

Rubinstein will provide an overview of Jacoulet and his work with a particular focus on the Rainbow Series.

Descendants of the Rainbow women who attend the presentation will be provided with a ribbon whose color corresponds to the rainbow color of their relative’s portrait.

Rubinstein has been on the faculty of the University of Guam’s Micronesian Area Research Center since 1988.  He teaches graduate courses in University’s Micronesian Studies Program.

He first became interested in Jacoulet’s work in the early 1980s and has curated several exhibits of Jacoulet’s works at the ISLA Art Gallery. Rubinstein has also contributed an essay to the catalog accompanying the 2013 exhibition of Jacoulet’s artwork at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris.

This presentation is sponsored by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council as a part of its ongoing Community Lecture Series.  It is open to the public and free of charge.

Please call council staff at 235-4785 for more information about this upcoming event.
