UOG professor to announce betel nut findings
University of Guam professor Dr. Yvette Paulino, PhD, will announce her findings and plans of conducting a Betel Nut Intervention Trial on Saipan. She will be speaking in a press conference at 3pm today, April 22, at the Governor’s Office conference room.
Paulino’s visit is part of the Commonwealth Cancer Association’s Oral Cancer Awareness program for this month. Her study is very timely since oral cancer on the rise.
Those who chew betel nut on Saipan, according to her study, are significantly at risk of having oral predominantly malignant disorders than those in Guam.
“Based on prior data collection, betel nut chewers, like smokers, generally want and intend to quit, but do not have specific plans of how or when they will quit,” said Paulino.
“Most betel nut chewers in our sample already have tried to quit on one or more occasions. These findings suggest that betel nut chewers can benefit from cessation programs modeled after smoking cessation programs,” she added.
CCA—a community-based nonprofit organization that promotes cancer awareness and prevention in the CNMI—invites cancer survivors, dental clinic partners, and community stakeholders to attend today’s very important event.
CCA, which began as a coalition of volunteers who are committed to reducing the burden of cancer in the CNMI, provides patient support services and serves as the liaison and advocate for cancer issues in the Commonwealth and the region.
These volunteers serve on the CCA board and committees that help raise funds and participate in training, outreach, and patient support programs. CCA’s programs and services are fully supported by the Marianas March Against Cancer.
