66 students inducted into Mt. Carmel School’s honor societies
Last week, 66 students were inducted into Mount Carmel School’s following honor societies: the Sacred Heart Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS), the Immaculate Conception Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), and the Father Arnold Bendowski Chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS).
It is also noteworthy that this was the 20th anniversary of the school’s Sacred Heart Chapter of the NHS, which was founded by then school president and the late Kathleen Sarmiento.
Apostolic administrator for the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa, Father Ryan Jimenez, was on hand to help celebrate the special occasion. He also opened the induction ceremony with a prayer and a blessing of the candles representing the values of the honor societies.
Soon after Fr. Ryan’s blessing, current NHS students explained the respective values of the honor societies. For the NHS, those values are scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The NJHS shares the same values as the NHS, with one additional value, citizenship. As for the NEHS, its values are scholarship, responsibility, leadership, and service. Students who have a 3.0 GPA fulfill the scholarship value of each society and are invited to apply for membership, for which they must demonstrate that they embody the other values of each respective society.
After the honor societies’ were explained, inductees were identified by the ceremonious “tapping” ritual, in which current honor society members go around tapping inducetees on their shoulders and inviting them to the main staging area to take their oaths, receive their membership insignia, and sign into the membership ledger.
After all new members were inducted, school president Galvin Deleon Guerrero gave the closing remarks. In his remarks, Deleon Guerrero reminded all inductees that they must remember to uphold the values of their societies by continuing to honor their commitment and continuing to be honorable.
