BREAKING NEWS: Former DPS commissioner now in custody
This afternoon, former Department of Public Safety commissioner James C. Deleon Guerrero was apprehended on his way to surrender to authorities.
This arrest follows an investigation by CNMI and federal officials into allegations of illegal conduct while serving as commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. Deleon Guerrero currently serves as the special assistant for Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
The CNMI Superior Court earlier in the day issued an arrest warrant against Deleon Guerrero after investigation showed that he allegedly sexually assaulted a then-15-year-old girl inside a pickup truck when he was police commissioner in 2013.
Upon learning of the arrest, acting governor Victor S. Hocog expressed his disappointment at the news and underlined that anytime actions by members of the cabinet put the welfare of the public at risk and erode public trust it is a cause for serious concern.
“Effective immediately, I am putting Mr. Deleon Guerrero on suspension without pay to allow the legal process to take its course,” said Hocog.
