Greg Borja is hoping to raise awareness on the plight of disabled people and he sees the Rotary Club of Saipan would help him with his advocacy.

He and Shamika J. Ratwatte, an assurance manager at Ernst & Young, were inducted to the local Rotary Club last Tuesday at Hyatt Regency Saipan’s Giovanni’s restaurant.

“I want to reach out to others to support our campaign of raising awareness about people with disabilities,” said Borja, a project specialist with the Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy Systems, Inc.

“This is one of the reasons why I joined the Rotary. I like their mission and the service that they do to the community. They give back to the community with various projects.”

His everyday work is spent mostly dealing with people with autism, but he has also attended to patients at the hospital and with individuals at the corrections.

He said that his friend, Rotary Club treasurer Tom Thornburgh, has been asking him to join the club for close to three years.

“He’s been asking me, bugging me every year. Finally, I caved in,” Borja said with a laugh. “Now I’m a proud member of the Rotary.”

He also volunteers with the Independent Football Club that educates them on how to better take care of the environment and going up against underage drinking to all teenagers.

“We also work with kids since our club focuses also on youth development. We also have a lot of projects and we usually do beach cleanups.”
