Man arrested for axe, samurai attack
A man allegedly beat up his wife for not giving him money, chased her with an axe, and broke items at a Susupe restaurant using a samurai sword last week.
Gui Fang Lai, 42, was taken to Superior Court for bail hearing yesterday afternoon on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, criminal mischief, assault and battery, assault, and disturbing the peace.
A $10,000 cash bail was initially imposed.
Police Detective Myron O. Laniyo stated in his report that when a police officer arrived at Good Day Restaurant at 11:31am last March 24, the officer observed broken wine bottles on the floor with its contents spilled.
The officer also observed one dining table was damaged and a TV screen hanging on the wall had a crack on the screen.
The victim had a bruised lip and scratches on the left hand and on the top of her left shoulder.
According to the victim, on March 20 at 11am, Lai asked $700 from her but she refused. He later asked the wife for $1,000, but she again refused. He asked later for $350, but the wife again denied it.
Lai got mad and pulled her hair, then swung a baby high chair at her, but she blocked it with her hands. He then slapped her on the mouth.
The victim ran out of the restaurant toward Joeten Susupe because he chased her with an axe.
The victim did not report the matter to the police until the following day, March 21, when Lai called her from the Department of Corrections after he was arrested for reckless driving.
Lai threatened he would kill anybody and break the store if she does not bail her out.
In the evening of March 23, as Lai and his wife were eating in the restaurant, Lai was asking her about another person.
Lai left then later came back with a sword and was swinging it left and right. She asked what’s wrong, but he continued shouting.
He hit ceramics and glass cups on the table with the sword. She cried and begged him to stop.
Police arrived and arrested Lai, but inside the police car, he kicked the window of the police vehicle.
Police recovered the axe and samurai sword that he used in hitting the dishes and the food on the table.
